77th Republic Day Celebration 2026

We celebrate our Republic Day on 26th January every year with joy and happiness to commemorate the Constitution adaption not Independence chosen for its link to the 1930 Purna Swaraj declaration. Our constitution is the world’s largest handwritten constitution,  signed by 308 members. Republic Day is distinguished from Independence Day, which celebrates the end of British rule on August 15, 1947.  Now, the Indian Independence Act of 1947 transferred legislative power to the Constituent Assembly. This marked the beginning of India’s journey toward drafting its own constitution and establishing democratic governance. This year India will be celebrating its 77th Republic Day. Indian Republic Day Celebration Starts with the Unfurling of The National Flag

The President of India unfurls the National Flag at Rajpath and followed by the Parade and a 21 gun salute, yet the inaugural parade in 1950 wasn’t at Rajpath (now Kartavya Path) but at Irwin Stadium (now Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium). Form 26th January 1955 Republic Day Parade is organized at Rajpath every year on Republic Day.

Vande Mataram” is the Theme of the  Indian Republic Day in 2026

The main theme for this year 77th Republic is “Vande Mataram” commemorating 150 years of the national song which was published in 1875, and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self Reliant India) as a secondary theme. As India is growing on the path of progress in every field like technology, science, innovations and its GDP is also increasing with a standard rate. Therefore the secondary theme of the 77th Republic is “Atmanirbhar Bharat”. European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa are the chief guests for India’s 77th Republic Day celebration, January 26, 2026. It is a feeling – good moment for us that for the first time the EU’s Joint leadership is likely to be the chief guest for the Republic Day Celebration before the India -EU summit, where both sides aim to finalise the long-anticipated Free Trade Agreement negotiations and signal strategic intention.

The Most Fascinating Part “ Republic Day Parade”

The most fascinating part of the the event is the, “Republic Day Parade” which begins with the arrival of the President. First of all the cavalry  bodyguards of the President salute the National Flag and during this time, the National Anthem is played and the 21canons instead 7- cannons of the Indian Army which,  are known as, “ 25 Ponders” are fired for firing in 3 rounds.

Army Personnel Use INSAS and Tavor Rifles in the Republic Day Parade

Indian Army personnel march with indigenously made INSAS rifles, while Special Security Forces use Tavor rifles from Israel. This mix represents both Indian advancements and international collaboration in defence.

Parade Groups Cover 12 Kilometers in Rehearsals

During rehearsals, parade contingents march 12 kilometers. However, the official route on January 26th spans 9 kilometers. Judges evaluate each group on 200 parameters to determine the best marching contingent.

The Flypast Features 41 Aircraft Managed By the Western Air Command

The grand Finale of the Parade, the flypast, involves 41 aircraft from the Indian Air Force. These aircraft take off from various bases and arrive over Rajpath in perfect synchronization, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.

Jana Gana Mana’, the National Anthem of India was Adopted by the  Constituent Assembly on January 24, 1950.

The National Anthem of India was written by the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Bengali it was later translated into Hindi and adopted as national anthem on 24th January 1950.

Indian Constitution is the World’s Largest Written Constitution

The Indian Constitution is the largest handwrittten Constitution of the world. It has 444 articles divided into 22 parts and 12 schedule. Moreover, 118 amendments were added to the Constitution.

The Constitution of India Took Almost 3 years to Complete

The Constitution of India took  a long time to written of  2 years 11 months and 18 days to complete. The constituent assembly held 11 sessions and met for total of 165 days. Members debated every detailed from fundamental rights to the structure of government. This effort ensured that the constitution reflected India, diversity, values and democratic spirit. This long process is one of the most important Republic Day facts because it highlights the seriousness with which India approached nation -building.

DR. B. R. Ambedkar was not the only Architect of the Constitution

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar is rightly known as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. However, many people do not realize that more than 300 members contributed to its creation. Experts from different fields, communities and regions work together to draft the Constitution. Their combined efforts ensured that it addressed social justice,  equality, federalism and individual rights. This collective approach reflects the true democratic spirit that Republic Day represents.

Dr. Sukarno Was the First Republic Day Chief Guest in 1950

Indonesia’s President Dr. Sukarno was the first Chief Guest  at the Republic Day parade in 1950. However, in 1955, during the first parade at Rajpath, Pakistan’s Governor- General Malik Ghulam Mohammed was the chief guest of the Republic Day parade.

The Beating Ceremony Marks the Conclusion of Republic Day

The Beating Ceremony held on 29th January at Vijay Chowk, the beating retreat ceremony features performances by the Army, Navy, and Air Force bands. It symbolizes the formal conclusion of Republic Day celebrations.
